ABOUT GEORGE, WILDERNESS AND UNIONDALE

‘George’ is set in the very centre of the spectacular Garden Route, surrounded by oceans, mountains, waterways, forests and farmlands – making it a sought-after holiday and lifestyle destination, and a great base from which to explore the area.

Situated in the Western Cape province of South Africa, ‘George’ goes far beyond the city CBD.  It includes towns such as Wilderness and Uniondale, as well as hamlets Herolds Bay, Victoria Bay, Hoekwil, Herold and beyond.  Its diverse landscapes are easy to access.  Within only a 1.5 hour drive, you can experience the vast, semi-desert open plains and passes of Uniondale as well as the  majestic mountains and cool blue ocean of George and Wilderness.

This outdoor paradise has so much to do and see.  Hike or mountain bike over 2,000km of mapped trails and enjoy adrenalin-fuelled adventures such as canoeing, paragliding, quad biking, kloofing, horse-riding, segways and more.  Enjoy leisurely, lazy days on the pristine sun kissed beaches and take a boat ride along the lake or river.  As the golfing mecca of South Africa, is there any place better to bring your clubs?  Tee off at several premier golf courses.

Art, cultural and historic experiences await.  Explore art routes and galleries, book a cultural tour or take a tuk-tuk around Uniondale.  The Transnet Museum filled with relic trains and other modes of transport is definitely not to be missed, and it is also the departure point for a tram train up the mountain. Foodies are spoilt for choice with great gastronomic experiences like coffee and chocolate pairings, wine pairings, craft your own gin, Kaukou tea pairings, farm stalls and a wide variety of fabulous restaurants for wining and dining.

With plenty to do and enjoy, as well as a comfortable year-round climate, George is an ideal getaway!

Road and Air Connectivity

The George Airport is a domestic terminal, with direct connectivity to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. It is also Africa’s first airport to be solar powered. In February 2016, a 200m2 solar plant was launched at the airport, committed to clean energy generation and sustainability. It features cafes and kiosks for shopping, as well as a Bidvest Premier Lounge.  There are several car hire options available.

The two main road routes from Cape Town to George are either along the N2 or Route 62 via Oudtshoorn. The N2 also connects George and Wilderness to neighbouring Garden Route towns, continuing all the way to Gqeberha. George is connected to Oudtshoorn via the N12, and Uniondale connects to George and Oudtshoorn via the N9, and via the R339 to Knysna.
