For many years, the Lions Karoo to Coast (K2C) 100km challenge has been more than just a thrilling adventure; it’s been a beacon of hope for those in need of sight-saving interventions. Rooted in the spirit of humanitarianism, this annual event has channeled its proceeds towards sight projects, fulfilling the noble challenge set forth by Helen Keller to Lions International: to become ‘knights of the blind.’
Since its inception, the K2C event has made a profound impact on thousands of lives, particularly in the realm of eye health. One of its most significant contributions has been sponsoring cataract operations at the Knysna Hospital, ensuring that those in need receive vital surgical interventions. Over the years, an impressive 5887 patients have benefited from sponsored cataract surgeries, preventing blindness and restoring vision.
In addition to cataract surgeries, the K2C event has played a pivotal role in supporting the SA Guide Dog Association, providing training for 66 guide dog puppies. Among these, eight dogs have been fully trained and named, offering invaluable companionship and independence to individuals who are blind. Notably, the presence of Knysna guide dog ‘Johnny’ at the Karoo to Coast event exemplifies the tangible impact of this initiative.
Furthermore, the purchase of Spot Vision equipment has revolutionized preliminary sight testing, enabling early detection of vision impairments. This technology has been instrumental in identifying individuals in need of further assessment by optometrists, facilitating timely intervention and care.
The K2C event has also been instrumental in establishing a well-equipped Eye Clinic, providing professional eye testing services with the assistance of dedicated optometrists. Although the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated adjustments, the commitment to eye care remained unwavering. Despite challenges, an average of 30 individuals continue to receive eye testing services each month, with spectacles supplied through Lions Brightsight.
One of the recent endeavors undertaken by Knysna Lions was the provision of free spectacles to schoolchildren, with the goal of supplying 100 pairs to those in need. This initiative, successfully completed, underscores the K2C event’s commitment to community welfare and inclusive eye health care.
As the Lions Karoo to Coast event celebrates its remarkable journey, it stands as a testament to the power of collective action and compassionate service. Every participant, supporter, and volunteer has contributed to its enduring legacy of giving, embodying the true spirit of humanitarianism. In honoring past and present Lions club members, we extend heartfelt congratulations and gratitude for their unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.
